Years ago I used to read at lunch. Then when I made friends with people there was no time to read. Especially the last few years it was all guys and me I felt strange picking up a book and reading in front of them. Plus there was only a few of us.
Now on 3rd shift no one else but the security guard and two guys on the help desk is in the building. No one is in the computer room but me so I can read all I want.
I understand your feeling about managers frowning about you taking the lunch at the same time as someone else. That happened the first year at my last company but my boss outgrow that over the years :)
