I've had that experience of someone saying they understood and then showing very clearly that they didn't. I think it's important to tell the trainee, please let me know if there's anything you don't understand. If you tell me you do, and you aren't able to do the job later, that just makes it more frustrating for everyone. Remind them you're trying to help them succeed at their job.

Once I was training this guy, and he kept saying "That's self-explanatory." This guy was the worst person who ever did that job.
